A man brandishing a shotgun comes into the bar soon after and demands to know what has happened to his sister. The bartender says he will take the man to her, and leads him to a strange tattoo parlour where the woman is working.

She says that she is happy there, but the gunman drags her to his vehicle and races off into the desert. His car breaks down and he is attacked by a group of naked men.

Regarding the story, your guess is as good as mine, but we are offered more gore in the form of some juicy shotgun blasts including an exploding head which makes the confusion slightly more bearable.

A group of masked men attack a family in their home, but find the daughter harder to deal with than they expected, especially when her one of the wraiths from the opening scene emerges from her back and the ground around them begins to crumble.

As you might have fathomed by now, Southbound left me more than a little confused by its bizarre narrative.

I enjoyed the occasional spot of splatter, but on the whole, I'd much rather just watch Creepshow again: I understand that film.

Interesting art piece if you like anthology types of horror. The director makes a point to give you the ability to interpet this movie the way you want, and delivers it with a sort of "Fellini meets Freddies Nightmares" attitude.

If you need explanations to justify your viewing experiences, this probably isn't the type for you. He takes you on and interesting journey that ends as it begins with decent actors and a professional delivery.

I'm certain and hopeful to see more from this director. I read too many glowing reviews, which increased my disappointment I feel.

The good: the concept of the 5 loosely related, lurid stories is clever, as is them taking place all in the same desolate area.

If you like creepy, graphic horror, that's also present. Also, very imaginative monsters in some of the stories. The bad: It's not fleshed out enough.

I don't need exposition, but these stories are so unexplained it's almost like they ran out of money when filming the picture.

And it's so low-budget that it was hard for me to get invested in the characters. The entire concept of what this town might intrigued me, but nothing is explained and I came away wanting more.

Great concept, but lackluster execution. Grimsonia 30 January I was happily surprised that this movie was very watchable and reminded me of my old pulp horror comics.

Another reviewer was right when he compared it to Tales from the Crypt, so if you like that style of show this will be right up your alley.

The stories are all intertwined one way or another which made me enjoy it even more. Was it great? No, but it was damned good for what it was.

This is a great anthology horror. Inventive stories, we had a blast! Finnegan's Wake GManfred 8 February Referenced Joyce's novel since the same impenetrability and circular narrative style are apparent in "Southbound", an "indie" now playing in very few theaters; only one in the NYC area.

It is a movie made up of five connected stories in which the end is the beginning, hence the circular feeling; the same feeling derived from reading the Joyce work.

Although there's no intellectual challenge here, "Southbound" is a cut above the 'slasher' film in technical achievement; it is well-written and acting is surprisingly good.

The script is better than normally found and retains the confounding motivation and irrationality predominant in films of this type.

But it is a 'slasher' and there are buckets of blood everywhere, with lots of gruesome scenes. It is better than many mainstream films of the genre and should be in many more theaters.

But be sure to wear a slicker to protect from blood spatter. TdSmth5 9 January When they try to leave they end up at the same place over and over.

Finally they stop and one guys is butchered by the thing that has been following them. The other guy goes back to the motel where he starts hearing and seeing his daughter and encounters the thing.

In a different room at the motel three girls from a band leave and end up with a flat tire somewhere and without a spare. A friendly old-fashioned couple gives them a lift.

During dinner another couple comes over with their twin sons. Two of the girls eat some nasty looking meat dish, the third girl is a vegetarian.

Later the two end up vomiting some black stuff and late at night simply walk outside in the dark. The other girl follows them and sees them joining some ceremony.

All the others are in robes and chanting. At some point they discover her and chase her as she runs to the street. And is hit by a car.

The driver calls but doesn't know where he is or where he is going. He decides to drive to a city nearby, goes into a hospital, which is completely empty.

The dispatcher, EMT, and now a doctor are on the phone and guiding him. He's told to intubate the girl by hand, and then manually to compress her lung.

He does so and eventually he allowed to leave. Nearby a woman is on the phone, I think she may have been one of the people talking to the guy.

She goes into a bar where later a guy with a shotgun breaks in and asks if anyone has seen his missing daughter.

After several scuffles, the guy at the bar takes him to a tattoo parlor where the daughter works. Against her will, the brother takes her with him and they drive away, but where to?

The brother faces a nasty while the girl drives back and goes into a restroom. From it a girl exits and joins her family eating. They go to a vacation house where soon enough 3 masked guys appear.

The break into the house and grab the couple. The daughter hid and is safe. By accident they end up killing the couple, and attack the daughter, but now things turn very surprising.

Among the surprises, two of the masked guys are the guys from the beginning in the truck. Southbound presents these interesting and creepy stories.

Each story poses more questions than it answers. And in this case it worked. Others here on the boards have come up with excellent explanations.

Perhaps one problem with Southbound is that it didn't intrigue me enough to try and come up with answers. I was perfectly content with not knowing how it all comes together, or whether it does, but apparently it does.

So a lot of thought went into these scripts but not enough clues were offered to the audience or it wasn't made clear that they were clues.

In any case, I enjoyed Southbound. It's a different, original, interesting movie that sets quite an atmosphere. I found the creature thing to be very neat and different, as well.

The cast was mostly unknown to me but Nathalie Love and Hassie Harrison are just lovely. Imme-van-Gorp 9 July I have watched this entire movie through although I felt like quiting during most of it and I am still unknown with the plotline.

The fact that there were 5 storylines that followed eachother up was a cool concept that could have worked really well, but the only problem with it was the execution.

The links between the storylines were too minor. They didn't have anything to do with eachother and might have well been 5 different short movies.

Even the parts that were supposed to be scary, were just too vague and weird to make me feel even the slightest bit of thrill or shock.

This movie has honestly not even done one thing that qualifies it to fall under the horror genre, so I wonder why they sell it as such.

Each storyline was way too short as well, which made it impossible for the watcher to connect with any of the people being "chased?

Die schlechten Bewertungen hätten mich fast abgeschreckt diesen Film Southbound will feel almost instantly familiar to fans of the VHS franchise, as it surfs a. So seien vorab all jene beruhigt, die den Film – immerhin ein Episodenfilm, der sich mit Kultgrößen wie Romeros CREEPSHOW () messen muß – eher.

It's an anthology that reminds me of the Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt, and it's truly on the level of creativity, especially when it comes to story telling visually.

If you love that movie, this is right up your alley. It was scary, gory, and messes with your mind, all at once, and it's perfect.

Thumbs up! Southbound is unlike most Horror films, belonging to a sub-genre I would define as "intertwined". Sufficing to say nothing ends well.

The common ground for the tales is the actual ground, as they all seem to be taking place at the same location, referred to as "the middle of nowhere" and giving a strong sensation of Hell itself.

Also, all the characters seem to be tuned in to the same radio station, where the DJ hints of his awareness to their sins and struggles.

In each story, the protagonists if you can call them that have secrets in an escalating level of severity, and I guess the moral is that Karma always catches up to you.

Seeing as how each story is around 17 minutes in average, it's quite challenging for me to rate the film as a whole.

The screen writing is by far the best feature, as the stories leave you confused, wondering, desperate and lost. Some fine shooting and cinematography as well, especially during the beginning of The Accident part great work from directors and screenwriters Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin.

The acting is also good, but the each of the cast is given little screen time, so it's hard to say anything more. I will say that all the cast is largely unknown, and still showed a lot of promise.

All in all, Southbound would appeal to fans of more "artistic" Horror films. It's unusual and quite unique, leaving the audience with an uneasy sense of bewilderment.

While not my preferable sub- genre, I was very impressed with it and enjoyed it to the last second. I notice that, thus far, none of the reviewers here on IMDb have attempted to give a plot summary for Southbound, which is not all that surprising given just how weird the film is.

Some inventive CGI creatures make this section bearable, but what the heck is happening, I haven't the foggiest!

A passing couple give the girls a lift to their house, and offer them a room for the night. This being a horror film, their hosts turn out to be strange cultists who use the girls in a bizarre ritual.

This part of the film is extremely predictable: as soon as the girls break down, it is obvious that they'll fall foul of passing strangers.

Panicking, he calls , and is directed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, the building is deserted, so the helpful EMT emergency medical technician gives instructions on how to save the girl's life.

The girl dies, but the man is sent to a locker room where he finds clean clothes, and then directed to a car identical to his own, albeit without any damage.

The relieved man drives away from the hospital. She hangs up the phone and enters a bar.

This led to me not caring about what happened to any of them. At the end of the movie I just felt confused, unsatisfied and annoyed about the hour and a half I would never get back.

I found it much better than expected; a B-movie for sure, but one which delivers plenty of bodily fluids and slime for the gore fans, as well as some creepy scenarios and a budget that does justice to the sometimes imaginative set-ups.

The opening sequence is particularly creepy, with the sight of those winged skeletal things enough to send shivers down the spine; if anything, the subsequent tales get darker and darker until they reach a pitch-black level.

Hellmant 27 May The film was impressively made on a very low-budget, stars a cast of mostly unknowns, and surprisingly got rave reviews from most critics.

I loved it as well. Each one deals with different people, traveling down the same stretch of highway. They must all confront different demons, and their worst fears about themselves.

One story involves two men trying to escape floating demons that are relentlessly chasing them , another tells the tale of a female rock band that breaks down on the deadly highway , another story deals with a man that hits a girl with his car, another one tells the tale of a brother trying to rescue his sister he believes is being held captive there and the final story deals with a family attacked by three masked strangers.

All the segments appear to deal with purgatory, and Hell, and they all interlock. I'm a big horror movie fan; especially indie horror flicks, and especially horror anthology films.

So I really like this movie. It's really well written, directed and acted. What I most love about this movie though, is that it reminds me of a real nightmare.

Everything is so creepy, weird and bizarre; and nothing seems to make any sense but it actually does. Asked 3 years ago.
